Heritage Sandbox announced

REACT is today pleased to announce the recipients of Heritage Sandbox. The six projects unlock histories, hauntings and happenings in all kinds of UK heritage attractions, unraveling rich accessible experiences through the use of cutting edge technologies.

After bringing together over 200 creative companies and world leading arts and humanities researchers at inspirational ideas labs, REACT is pleased to announce six collaborative awards. The successful collaborative projects representing creative industries and inspiring academic research will make an investment totaling over £300,000 to the UK’s cultural economy.

Each project aims to deliver new ways in which to experience heritage attractions, facilitating new kinds of social interaction, engaging pervasive media and immersive digital technologies to bring audiences closer to past lives and collective histories.

Projects range from augmented reality mirrors on board Bristol’s famous SS Great Britain to a multi-sensory stroll through the exotic Victorian pleasure gardens of Bath. They explore contemporary attitudes to death and human remains in Cemeteries and Museums, giving the dead a technological voice and bring history back to life through interactive located archives using real memories and historical characters.

The Future Cemetery is a collaboration between John Troyer, Calling the Shots and Arnos Vale Cemetery. Using mobile and projection technologies to blend Victorian past and digital present, engaging cemetery visitors with the UK’s postmortem past.

Ghosts in the Garden brings together Steve Poole, new games start up Splash & Ripple and The Holburne Musem: Rediscover the Georgian Pleasure Gardens of Bath via game, sound-scape and 'Georgian Listening Device'.

Tim Cole and Interactive Places will work with ss Great Britain on Reflecting the Past: Pioneering the use of augmented reality ‘mirrors’, to create an interactive experience onboard the ss Great Britain.

Charlotte Crofts, Calvium and Bristol City Council  are developing City Strata: The Cinemap Layer which enables users to explore and contribute to Bristol’s rich cinema-going heritage in the places where it actually happened.

Memory of Theatre brings together Paul Clarke, Pyxis Design and Bristol Old Vic and will create  a dynamic archive of the memories of Bristol Old Vic audiences, accessed via mobile in the building.

And The Ivory Bangle Lady is a collaboration between Christopher Knüsel, Imagemakers and Yorkshire Museum, which reveals the mysteries of a young woman, buried with an unusual range of burial gifts in Roman times.

The six Heritage Sandbox are great examples of the new ways of thinking that can be achieved by bringing together academic research with creative companies. We are very excited about working with these collaborations over the next three months and bringing their projects to life”
