On Monday 25thJune, the REACT team travelled to Exeter for the first Books&Print Ideas Lab.

The event explored the theme for our latest Sandbox funding call. The Lab also offered a chance to think together about REACT, its aims and objectives, and the opportunities for collaboration that exist between academia and the creative economy.

The event was held in Exeter Northcott Theatre, offering an unusual but entertaining space in which to share ideas.

Attendees ranged from academics to artists, publishers to performers, and from makers to animators. Everyone was encouraged to set the topics for conversation at the event, run their own break-out discussion groups and to follow the themes and ideas they felt had the most energy and interest. Consequently, there was a constant buzz as attendees moved in and out of the participant-led sessions, gathering ideas, meeting one another and developing new connections.

Discussions at the Ideas Lab

The Ideas Labs are an opportunity for REACT to meet its community, to take part in the conversation about collaboration and improve the delivery of the project’s core aims. The Labs reveal the challenges inherent in building collaborations that span across academic, creative and commercial spheres.

Ideas Labs are a way to kick-start a Sandbox, to put ideas in motion and start the process of finding collaborators and putting together applications. This event was no exception, and we’re excited about where it can lead from here.

The Bristol Ideas Lab will be held at Watershed on Tuesday 3rdJuly, and the Cardiff Ideas Lab on Monday 9thJuly at Chapter.
